As a judge on The Block and Reno Rumble, interior designer Darren Palmer spends hours scouring shops for amazing finds. Here, he shares his little black book of the most stylish interior haunts in Sydney.

Orient House, Glebe

“Two levels, wall to wall of amazing finds from across the globe. There are Thai, Chinese, African and Indian pieces of décor, sculpture, furniture and textiles. You’ll find a piece from Orient House in every one of my projects as far as I can remember.”

Horgans, St Peters

“A great blend of retail and wholesale, this is the perfect place for me as a designer but also for retail customers to find interesting chairs, occasional furniture, décor, soft furnishings and lighting. The range is a little offbeat but really nicely curated.”

GlobeWest, Alexandria

“You’ll also see GlobeWest products in my work. The showroom is even better than the comprehensive online offering as you can really appreciate the range. Great for occasional furniture, side tables, coffee tables etc. And keep an eye out for the outdoor products.”

Coco Republic, Alexandria, Auburn and Crows Nest

“I frequent Coco Republic for its own range of furniture as well as favouring some exclusive brands, namely Oly San Francisco. The product is highly finished in a refined palette of colours, materials and fabrics. The entire Coco Republic showroom is full of beautifully designed pieces.”

Cromwell, Redfern

“I love Cromwell for its lighting. As representatives of Visual Comfort they have a beautiful array of traditional lighting and furniture.”

Catapult, Darlinghurst

Catapult is a curation of the latest and greatest in Australian established and emerging design. The product range is forward thinking with some really striking pieces. They’re also able to custom pieces to suit your space and colour scheme – something I’ve done with them many times in the past with awesome results.”

Project 82, Surry Hills

Project 82 has several brands under its umbrella as well as creating its own product. You’ll find great lighting, sofas, occasional furniture – pretty much anything you need for a well-turned out home.”

Carpet Court, various locations

“OK, this sounds like a bit of a plug as I'm an ambassador for Carpet Court but it is the only place to find my range of flooring and rugs! I created a range called Provincial Lane - I've used it in my home, office and on interior design projects – and I'm really proud that I've been able to create something that's high in design qualities but at an affordable price.”

Becker Minty, Potts Point

Becker Minty unearths treasures from all over the world. You can expect to find amazing lamps and home decor, trays, vases, jewellery, small furniture like drink carts or side tables and so much more. Every time I walk into Becker Minty I walk out with something I had to have.”

Boyd Blue, Rosebery

This is a trade-only store so you’ll need to be accompanied by your designer but the product range is comprehensive. It’s my go-to place to find wall art, furniture and décor and, my favourite, the amazing Arteriors lighting range.”

Myer, various locations

“Because it has premium brands and lots of them – I’m a big fan of being able to source for any number of rooms at once. It’s the go-to for linen, soft furnishings and home décor – and when the time comes, the Christmas ranges are second to none.”
