The Best Sleep Masks for Travel
Even for the most confident sleepers, long haul travel can impact your ability to gain quality shut-eye. Fortunately, there’s an array of travel accessories on the market to help improve your chances of snoozing in transit. Travel pillows are one of the most popular products restless travellers turn to but according to Dr Moira Junge, CEO of the Sleep Health Foundation, there’s an even more helpful accessory that’s often overlooked. “There are multiple factors that contribute to someone’s quality of sleep, but darkness is the most crucial factor in the process of falling asleep, which is why eye masks can be such a game changer.”
While it may not guarantee slumber on a flight – especially with the wobble of circadian rhythms as you cross multiple time zones – blocking out light plays a significant role in our body’s sleep-wake cycle. “Melatonin, the sleep hormone that makes us feel drowsy and helps maintain sleep, is only produced and secreted in dark conditions,” Junge says. “Conversely, light suppresses melatonin, and light can also act as a stimulant – you’re more alert and more likely to miss your ‘sleep cues’ [such as feeling tired or having heavy eyes] by generally feeling more awake when you’re in bright environments.”
According to Junge, eye masks are an essential part of your suite of sleep aids – along with neck supports, noise cancelling headphones or earplugs, comfortable clothes and a cosy blanket. “It’s all about reducing your ‘sleep effort’,” Junge says. “The anxiety we can stir up by putting too much pressure on ourselves to fall asleep can be the biggest hurdle. Anything you can do to make yourself more comfortable and ease the anxious feelings that can lead to insomnia is a good thing, so travelling with an eye-mask can be part of that solution.”
There are many eye masks out there claiming a range of benefits. To help you find the best fit for you, here are some of our favourite designs, created with air travel in mind.
TRTL Glimpse Sleep Mask
1/11Building on the success of its wildly popular neck pillow, TRTL has expanded its range to include several sleep-enhancing travel products, including its Glimpse Sleep Mask. The innovative travel brand has reinvented the traditional sleep mask to offer either a total blackout or the option of letting in a little light via an adjustable panel on the front, which also allows the wearer to take a peek at their surroundings without removing their mask. The Glimpse Sleep Mask comes with detachable eye cups, so you can fine tune the fit to your personal preference.
Mavogel Sleep Mask
2/11Sometimes a simple solution is the best solution. Case in point, the Mavogel Sleep Mask. This seemingly no-frills design relies on the quality of its materials – 100% cotton jersey – alongside subtle features, such as a malleable wire that ensures the best light-blocking fit over the bridge of the nose and precisely proportioned side wings to block any errant light around your temples. The mask’s flat profile makes it an ideal choice for sleepers who want to lean against the fuselage wall (or their travel buddy) and it comes with an adjustable strap.
Ostrichpillow Eye Mask
3/11Compared to the head-swallowing design of its quirky travel pillow, Ostrichpillow’s sleep mask follows a more classic approach, although it’s still flush with innovations. Using six layers of high-quality materials, this machine-washable mask features an ergonomic, sculpted interior that blocks out all light without applying any direct pressure to the eyes.
Cozy Earth Stretch-knit Bamboo Sleep Mask
4/11Breathable bamboo fibres provide both silky-soft plushness and a cool feel – ideal for hot sleepers. Cozy Earth’s fluffy filling follows the contour of the eyelids, preventing light from creeping in while avoiding exerting any pressure. Its low profile and stretchy headband make slipping it on and off a breeze.
Mzoo Sleep Mask
5/11A combination of generous eyecups and a memory-foam seal ensures wearers of the Mzoo Sleep Mask are plunged into total darkness as soon as it’s fitted. The calibrated design doesn’t completely eliminate eye pressure, but rather redirects it, applying a light compression on the temples and around the eye sockets that can help encourage a sense of calmness. Its clever architecture makes this mask less comfortable for side-leaners, but for those who are happy to sleep with their head against their seat, a peaceful pitch-black snooze is in store.
Nidra Deep Rest Eye Mask
6/11A sleep mask needs to toe a fine line between delivering the benefits of darkness and avoiding potential discomfort that might keep the wearer awake. The Nidra Deep Rest Mask tackles this challenge by being so lightweight (just 18 grams), it’s barely there. It also has some of the roomiest eye cups on the market, so there’s no annoying pressure anywhere around the eyes. Its generous proportions wrap the face from temple to temple, providing a snug yet delicate fit that prevents any light from penetrating.
Alaska Bear Natural Silk Sleep Mask
7/11While some eye masks fend off the light by creating a fortress around your eyes, this plump, silk-lined mask protects your peepers with a comforting bear hug. The wide, cushioned pad with a smooth, cooling finish fits a multitude of face shapes and sits easily against features that might not gel as well with more sculpted designs.
Imak Compression Eye Mask
8/11The therapeutic design of the Imak Compression Eye Mask is geared towards helping relieve stress and easing potential muscular discomfort. This compression increases circulation and can reduce puffiness around the eyes, making this a great accessory for those overnight flights when you need to look your best as soon as you disembark.
Casper Snoozewear
9/11Noise is an unavoidable part of any flight and, much like light, it can be the bane of any restless sleeper’s journey. The Casper sleep mask has the added benefit of also covering your ears, not only reducing sounds but also creating a cosy, rugged-up feel, like you’re all tucked up in bed. Pair this 100% cotton mask with noise-cancelling earbuds for a blissful sleep-inducing combination.
Sound Oasis Glo to Sleep Advanced Sleep Therapy Mask
10/11Instead of merely blocking out light, this mask puts it to work. Calming red and blue LEDs, embedded on the inside of the eye cups, hijack your circadian rhythms with scientifically crafted displays. At the push of a button, you can summon a soothing light show, gently pulsing and dimming to lull you to sleep. Memory foam around the eye area and an adjustable Velcro strap prevent this peaceful glow from disturbing any of your fellow passengers – and yes, it can also be used as a regular sleep mask.
