Frequently asked questions

There are many ways you can upgrade with Qantas, including Classic Upgrade Rewards, Bid Now Upgrades and Domestic On Departure Upgrade Rewards.

You can request an upgrade on eligible paid and confirmed tickets on flights operated by Qantas, with a Qantas (QF) flight number on the ticket. From time to time, you can also request an upgrade on codeshare flights that have a QF flight number on your ticket and are operated by another carrier.

  • Use your Qantas Points to upgrade from Economy to Premium Economy, Economy to Business, Premium Economy to Business or Business to First.
  • Classic Upgrade Reward requests are prioritised based on several factors including your original booked cabin and your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership tier.
  • Classic Upgrade Rewards are available on Classic Flight Rewards in Economy and Premium Economy, Classic Plus Flight Rewards in Economy and Premium Economy and eligible paid and confirmed domestic and international flights with a Qantas (QF) flight number on your ticket, and from time to time on codeshare flights operated by another carrier that have a QF flight number on your ticket.
  • Classic Upgrade Rewards are subject to capacity and availability is limited. Classic Upgrade Rewards are not available on all fare types.

  • Use cash, or a combination of cash and Qantas Points to upgrade to a premium cabin.
  • Available on selected Qantas flights. 
  • Bid Now Upgrades can be requested on eligible paid and confirmed domestic and international flights operated by Qantas, with a Qantas (QF) flight number on your ticket. 
  • Request an upgrade for yourself, and other people travelling with you in your booking, on one or more eligible flights in your trip. 
  • Acceptance of a Bid Now Upgrade request is in Qantas’ sole and absolute discretion and determined by various factors including (and not limited to) cabin availability for that flight, total offers received, and the amount offered per passenger.

  • Platinum One, Platinum, Gold, Qantas Club and Points Club Plus members with a paid and confirmed ticket who have checked-in for their flight can request a Domestic On Departure Upgrade Reward within the Qantas App.
  • Upgrade requests for eligible family members who are not on the same booking, and/or requests for unaccompanied minors (children under 12), and passengers who require mobility assistance will need to be made at Australian domestic Qantas Club lounges or domestic Business lounges.
  • You may request a Domestic On Departure Upgrade Reward from three hours before scheduled departure until boarding commences on Qantas operated services with a Qantas (QF) flight number on your ticket.

You can't purchase a confirmed upgrade, but you can purchase a ticket for a premium cabin if available. See the terms and conditions of your ticket.

No. Classic Upgrade Rewards have the highest priority and will be processed before Bid Now Upgrades. If seats remain after all Classic Upgrade Rewards requests are processed, Bid Now Upgrade bids will be prioritised based on the value of the bid.

You can request a Classic Upgrade Reward after you’ve paid and received confirmation for a ticket on a Qantas flight with a Qantas (QF) flight number up until 10 hours before departure on international flights and up until five hours before departure on domestic flights. Classic Upgrade Rewards are processed before Bid Now Upgrades. A Classic Upgrade Reward and Bid Now Upgrade cannot be placed at the same time. 

You can check on qantas.com if you’re eligible for a Bid Now Upgrade once you have made your booking. Eligible customers may also receive an email invitation with details on how to place a bid.

You can request a Domestic On Departure Upgrade Reward from three hours before your scheduled flight departure until boarding commences on a Qantas flight with a Qantas (QF) flight number, once you have checked in for your flight.

Classic Upgrade Reward

You will receive an SMS advising if your Classic Upgrade Reward has been accepted and can view the status of your request in the Qantas App. You will be notified from the following times before your scheduled flight departs:

Domestic flights

  • Platinum One and Platinum members; from three days 
  • Gold, Silver and Bronze members; from 24 hours

International flights

  • Platinum One members; from seven days 
  • Platinum members; from three days 
  • Gold, Silver and Bronze members; from 24 hours 

Bid Now Upgrade

Eligible customers will receive an email advising if your Bid Now offer has been accepted. This will be within 24 hours of the scheduled flight departure.

Domestic On Departure Upgrade Reward

You will find out as soon as your request is processed in the Qantas App. You can request an On Departure Upgrade for Australian domestic travel three hours before your scheduled flight departure, once you have checked in for your flight.

You'll earn Qantas Points and Status Credits for the fare you originally purchased.

Yes, if your upgrade is confirmed before check-in, you'll enjoy the benefits of the upgraded fare on the day of travel, including Qantas lounge access, where available. You will also be able to access the domestic Qantas lounges if you are successful in obtaining a Domestic On Departure Upgrade reward.

Yes, if your upgrade is confirmed, all passengers in your booking that have been included in the upgrade request will be upgraded.

Yes. On Australian domestic flights, Platinum One, Platinum, Gold, Qantas Club and Points Club Plus members with a paid and confirmed ticket can request an On Departure Upgrade Reward.

No. The points required for a Classic Upgrade Reward will always be lower than the points required for a Bid Now Upgrade. However, if you prefer to use fewer points than is required for a Classic Upgrade Reward, if eligible, you can bid for a Bid Now Upgrade with a mix of cash and points.

Any special requests, including meal or seating requests, whether included in the original booking or not, will not be guaranteed for the upgraded booking.
