Arrival information

What is the main airport called?

Jakarta International Airport (Soekarno-Hatta) (CGK) It is the main airport serving the greater Jakarta area on the island of Java, Indonesia. Jakarta Airport is located in Benda, 20km northwest of Jakarta city centre.

Arriving in Jakarta

When your flight arrives in Jakarta you’ll be welcomed by the staff the airport to get your visit off to the right start.

Getting into Jakarta from Jakarta Airport

With a range of transport options available at Jakarta airport, getting into the city centre is easy. Choose from bus, taxi, train, hotel transfer or car rental. By bus, take the DAMRO Airport express bus to Gambir Station taking between 40 and 80 minutes to get to the city depending on the traffic. Buses are located near the arrivals hall and run every 15 to 30 minutes. The Airport Rail Link is an efficient way to get to Sudirman Baru Station, taking just 45 minutes and it’s the best way to avoid the traffic. Taxis are located on the arrivals area and its best to use a reputable company such as Blue Bird. The Blue Bird app is a great way to pre-book a taxi, taking around 50 minutes to get to town. Alternatively, you may wish to book a hotel transfer.

Getting around Jakarta

Jakarta is known for being one of the world’s worst cities for traffic, so it's best to plan ahead and allow plenty of time to get to where you want to go on time. Many wealthy Indonesians and expats employ a full-time driver to take care of their transport needs, but for the average Jakartan and visitors this is a luxury. Buses are available, known as TransJakarta, which are large airconditioned buses running throughout the city. They have dedicated travel lanes, which helps skip some of the traffic. Trains run from Jakarta to the suburbs and beyond and are a good way to avoid the heavily congested roads. Taxis are available, though its best to book a taxi through an app such as Blue Bird or Grab, as these drivers can speak some English. There are slod ojeks which are motorcycle taxis and a bike share scheme, with cycle paths being added around the city. Hiring a car is not generally recommended, though you can hire a driver to take you where you want to go. Due to the pollution and traffic, walking can be unpleasant though you can walk around the shopping malls and in some expat residential areas.
