When to visit

The best time to visit Washington D.C. is typically in autumn (September to November). The weather is comfortable (10ºC to 20ºC), crowds are smaller and there's still plenty to do around the city. Whenever you decide to go, there is always plenty on in the Nation's Capital. If you visit in March to April, you can catch the popular National Cherry Blossom Festival. Memorial Day weekend is 4th of July and Thanksgiving weekend is another popular time to visit. Winters are often very cold and snowy dropping to -1ºC.

What is the main airport called?

Baltimore/Washington International (BWI). Thurgood Marshall Airport, commonly referred to as BWI or BWI Marshall, is an international airport in the Eastern United States serving mainly Baltimore, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. It's the 22 busiest airport in the United States and the busiest in the Nation Capital. BWI Airport is located around 14 km south of downtown Baltimore and 48 km northeast of Washington D.C.

The helpful staff at Washington Airport will greet you when you land and assist you with your needs. Once you collect your bags from the arrivals area, there are various transport options available to get you on your way.

Getting into Washington from Washington Airport

Getting to and from the BWI Marshall Airport is easy with all of the different transport options that are available. Choose from public transport to app-based ride services, you can find a mode of transport to meet your travel needs. For public transport you can take the Amtrak or MTA light rail bus service. Rental cars are a great option from the terminal with a free shuttle service from the terminal to the car hire facility. Shuttle services are available to various hotels or the Bay runner shuttle is a convenient way to get to town. The taxi stands are located just outside of the baggage claim area on the lower level of the BWI Marshall Airport terminal near doors 5 and 13. App-based ride services pick up and drop off passengers at the terminal curb on the upper level/departures. 

Getting around Washington

There are many ways to get around Baltimore/Washington, with the following modes of transport available. Explore the national’s capital with ease by using public transport. The most commonly used transport systems for getting around the DC area are operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). It's also possible to take the MetroBus with hundreds of routes throughout the city and the greater Washington, DC area. The DC Circulator is a bus and for $1 for all riders, travels along six specific routes designed for easy-on, easy-off access at points of interest throughout the District. One of the best ways to experience Washington, DC is on foot. The city’s wide sidewalks meander past the inspiring monuments and museums found on the National Mall, as well as the intimate museums, world-class theatres and splendid gardens in the city’s collection of neighbourhoods. For an economical way to explore the city there are plenty of options for renting bikes, scooters or mopeds. Taxis, the Vamoose Bus, limousines, chauffuer cars, ride share and guided tours are also available.
