Improving your wellbeing on ultra long-haul flights
The University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre is working in partnership with Qantas to develop and test strategies to mitigate jetlag on ultra long-haul flights. A study is being conducted over the next three years by the Charles Perkins Centre to learn more about improving your wellbeing on ultra-long-haul flights.
What does the study involve?
Participating in the study will take around two and a half weeks. The research will focus on in-flight and on-the-ground schedules of light, food intake, sleep, and physical movement. Once completed, participating Qantas Frequent Flyer members will be awarded 50,000 Qantas Points.
Flights included in the study
The flight routes included in this study are:
- Sydney to Los Angeles (QF11)
- Sydney to Johannesburg (QF63)
- Sydney to London (QF1), and
- Sydney to New York (QF3).
Booking these flights will not guarantee that you'll be eligible to participate. The study will be conducted periodically over three years and eligible flight dates are subject to change.

To be considered for this study, you'll need to;
- Be a Qantas Frequent Flyer member
- Be opted in to Market Research under subscription preferences in your Profile
- Be travelling in Economy or Premium Economy on an eligible long-haul flight at particular times
- Have added your Qantas Frequent Flyer number to your booking
- Satisfy the study requirements set out by the Charles Perkins Research Centre. These could include your age, location, health conditions, type of work, length of trip you are taking and the time you plan to spend in your destination.
The final eligibility will be determined after completing the Charles Perkins Centre eligibility survey and a review by the Charles Perkins Centre team. A link to the survey will be in your email.

Participants will need to be invited to participate in this study via an email sent by Qantas Frequent Flyer. To be considered for an invitation to this study you will need to be opted into Market Research, travelling on an eligible flight and satisfy the study requirements set out by the Charles Perkins Centre.
Qantas has facilitated this research, but it is wholly managed by The University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre. You must be a Qantas Frequent Flyer member to earn points. Membership and points are subject to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program terms and conditions. Any information collected in the eligibility survey and the subsequent study will be collected directly by the Charles Perkins Centre and handled in accordance with the University of Sydney’s privacy policy and the NHMRC National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (USYD HREC Approval No. 2023/HE000688). The Charles Perkins Centre will not share your personal information provided as part of the study with Qantas, except for the fact that you have participated in the study for the sole purpose of determining your eligibility for this offer. The researchers will produce reports describing results in groups of participants, but you will not be individually identifiable in any of the reports. These reports will be shared with Qantas, and results will be published in peer-reviewed journals. Qantas reserves the right to withdraw or extend this offer at any time.
