Managing climate risk

We recognise that air travel is currently not environmentally sustainable. That's why we are committed to taking steps – in the air and on the ground – to reduce our impact on the environment.

Our Climate Action Plan (PDF) details our interim targets to support our target of net zero emissions by 2050.

  • 25% reduction in net Scope 1 and 2 emissions from 2019 levels by 2030,
  • 10% of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the fuel mix by 2030,
  • zero single-use plastics by 2027, and
  • zero onshore general waste to landfill by 2030.

We are focused on driving progress across three pillars:

  • Sustainable operations, including waste reduction and circularity,
  • Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), and
  • Carbon credits, recognising aviation is a hard-to-abate sector that produces significant emissions and carbon credits will have an ongoing role in helping to compensate for air travel emissions even as alternate direct emissions reduction levers (such as SAF, fuel-efficient fleets, and emerging technologies) become more readily available.

Some of these pillars we can influence independently, others will require action and collaboration within our industry, across sectors, and by policymakers, and some will rely on technology development.

Qantas affirmed its support of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) in 2017 and will start reporting under the Australian Government's mandatory climate reporting regime in late 2026. Our response to its key pillars can be found in our sustainability report including scenario analysis which considered both transition and physical risks and opportunities for the business under different scenarios and provides a preliminary assessment of the financial implications of these risks. The analysis was based on scenarios aimed at improving our understanding of the risks and opportunities arising from climate change.
