Places to stay
From villas over the ocean to basic bungalows, there’s no shortage of accommodation in Tahiti. Looking for affordable family hotels? Why not stay in the capital, Pape’ete, where you can experience Tahitian nightlife and stroll around the markets.
For those looking for the perfect swell, head to Teahupoo, on the Southern edge of Tahiti. If you’re more interested in the finer things in life head to Moorea Island, where you can swim in fish-filled lagoons and explore the surrounding reef.
After a glimpse of Tahitian life? Take a trip to the Gambier Islands, and stay in one of the Island’s family-run lodges. If you’d prefer to spend your holiday in seclusion, book your accommodation at the Brando Resort, on Marlon Brando’s private Island, Tetiaroa. Or for a castaway style romantic escape, stay on the tiny Vaine island.
Things to do
From surfing the famous Teahupo’o swell to sampling the vanilla in Tahaa’s famous vanilla plantations, there’s never a dull moment on this island paradise. For surfers, there’s nothing like rising with the sun and stealing away for a morning paddle. Papara is a popular beach break for those who aren’t ready for heavier reefs, Ha'apiti is a challenging wave off Moorea to boat out to, or visit the famed Teahupo'o to watch the heavyweights surf its perfect waves.
If you prefer to glide beneath the waves rather than on them, The Cargo Ship and the sunken WW2 Catalina plane are a dream for wreck divers while snorkellers and divers of all abilities can explore the vibrant waters of Rangiroa's, The Aquarium. For fun, hire an underwater scooter to admire the marine life in crystal clear waters.
For shopping visit Le Marché de Papeete, a waterfront market filled with Tahitian-made crafts and artisans selling everything from black pearl jewellery to carvings and quilts.
If you’re a keen cook or lover of the sweet side of life, venture off for a tour at Vallee de la Vanille—one of Tahaa’s famous vanilla plantations— where you can sample different vanilla-infused products. The famous ‘roulettes’ and nightly food trucks, along Place Vai'ete, are a lively and local dining scene with crêpes and pizzas served with live music most weekends. When it comes to Tahiti, all you have to do is pick your paradise.
