Our approach
Since Qantas was founded in the Queensland outback in 1920, our iconic Australian airline has helped the communities in which we operate. From assisting Australians in times of natural disaster to providing an international platform to showcase the best our country has to offer, the Qantas Group continues to make a significant social and economic contribution.
While COVID-19 led us to restructure much of our business, one thing that didn't change was our commitment to the community. We’re proud to continue to serve regional communities, support tourism, champion diversity, and reconciliation, and promote the best of Australia to the world.
The Qantas Group has long-standing partnerships with organisations that have a positive impact on the community. Together with UNICEF, we have raised over $37.7 million to support children and families around the world.
As an airline founded in Regional Australia, we’re also proud to offer a number of initiatives to support the unique needs of these communities. In 2019, we launched the Qantas Regional Grants program to help these communities sustain brighter futures by providing financial, flight, and marketing support to charities, organisations, causes, projects and individuals. 20 grants were distributed across the country to a number of local community initiatives and larger charitable organisations.
Following a pause as a result of COVID-19, the Qantas Regional Grants program returned in 2023 with an increased investment of $10 million in support over the next five years.

In August 2019, Qantas announced a $10 million investment to further reduce fares for residents of 16 regional cities through our discounted fares program. This is on top of existing discounts and is aimed at making last-minute travel more affordable in towns that are particularly remote or have a high concentration of resources industry traffic.
In January 2020, we officially opened the Qantas Group Pilot Academy in Toowoomba, Queensland. With the capacity to train up to 250 pilots a year, it's part of a long-term strategy to ensure a pipeline of talent for aviation in the region.
Championing reconciliation
At Qantas, we strive to reflect the Spirit of Australia.
A spirit that’s over 60,000 years old and celebrates the knowledge and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Our vision for reconciliation is a shared national identity that will be achieved through the social, economic, and cultural inclusion of all First Nations Peoples.
Qantas is dedicated to creating work and training opportunities, incorporating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses into our supply chain, and telling the stories of the First Australians. In 2019, we were proud to join with 13 other Elevate RAP organisations to share our support for the Uluru Statement from the Heart and its proposed reforms of voice, treaty, and truth.
Qantas, alongside many other Australian companies, engages in a number of social issues from gender diversity and LGBTQI inclusion to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander reconciliation. Our identity is the Spirit of Australia, and one of the most fundamental values in this country is the notion of a ‘fair go’, which is why we speak up on important social issues.
We are proud to have a long-standing relationship with Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, supporting the LGBTQI+ community, and playing an active role as a leading Australian organisation that supports equality.
As the national carrier, Qantas also continues to support organisations and initiatives that showcase the best of Australia on the international stage including the Australian Olympic Committee and Paralympics Australia.
Environmental sustainability at Qantas
Qantas is committed to minimising our impact on the planet – in the air and on the ground – to help protect the future of travel.
At Qantas, we recognise that climate change is a significant issue for the aviation industry. That’s why we’re committed to reducing our carbon emissions by 25% by 2030 (from 2019 levels) and achieving net zero emissions by 2050. By creating comprehensive carbon offsetting programs, minimising waste and single-use plastics, and investing in more sustainable aircraft and aviation fuel, we’re working towards a brighter future of travel.
