About us

The expertise of our Pilots and Cabin Crew play a pivotal role in our international reputation for safety. Flight training forms an essential part in ensuring our aircrew are equipped with the knowledge, skills and behaviours that exceed national and international aviation requirements. Each year we instruct, develop and examine the proficiency of over 12,000 aircrew members.

We pride ourselves in engendering a culture of safety and professionalism, along with an exemplary skillset in the crew members that are trained in our programs. The performance of the airline attests to the success of this approach.

Qantas Flight Training has its main training bases in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. Due to the dynamic nature of our industry, we regularly conduct training in other locations around the world depending on the needs of our crew.

Training bases

We operate purpose built facilities where pilots and cabin crew benefit from high level practical and theoretical training. These centres contain flight simulators, aircraft cabin mock-ups, multimedia and virtual reality learning areas. Operationally experienced and highly qualified instructors run each session and are also available as advisers for your training needs.

Locations

Brisbane

Our Brisbane Training Centre is located within the Brisbane Airport precinct, housing flight simulators for our airline pilots. This facility operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week, ensuring our pilots have access to high end facilities for training.

Melbourne

Our Melbourne Centre is found at Airport West, a short drive from Melbourne's Tullamarine International Airport. It's a purpose-built training precinct for both pilot and cabin crew training. This facility operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for our crew to complete classroom and computer-based training, emergency procedures, aviation medicine, dangerous goods, cabin training and flight simulator and procedural training.

Sydney

The Sydney Flight Training Centre is a purpose built training facility built in partnership with CAE Systems. It's located near Sydney's Kingsford Smith International Airport, 10km south of the city centre. This facility is home to flight simulators and various cabin training facilities for our aircrew.

Flight simulators

We have the most advanced and extensive fleet of full motion flight simulators in the region. The simulators have as standard state of the art visual fidelity, motion and sound. This means crew can be trained in all aspects of normal and non-normal operations; including instrument approaches and landings in all weather conditions, in an environment that is safe, and reflects the real aircraft cockpit in almost every respect.

Dedicated on-site maintenance support ensures that training and checking are carried out around the clock.

Pilot training

For over fifty years, Qantas Flight Training has been supporting pilots as they obtain licence approvals to fly various aircraft types. Our courses include the latest simulators and multimedia learning, making them among the most comprehensive in the industry. Interaction with skilled training professionals ensures a confident knowledge of systems and processes that prepare trainees for the flight simulators, and eventually, a successful career flying with Qantas.

The foundation of all our programs are pathways and policies designed to achieve the highest possible standards in the operation of commercial aircraft.

The curriculum is developed to cover the requirements of government regulators and the airlines. Courses have a detailed theoretical component, followed by quality instruction in the full flight simulators located within our training bases.

A valuable part of each course is the operational expertise shared by our instructional staff. Their 'real world' industry experience has been gained working within the Qantas Group of Airlines.

Cabin crew training

While cabin crew don't participate in flying the aircraft, their responsibility for absolute safety and security in the cabin, along with their capabilities to safety direct passengers in an emergency, requires extensive theory and practical training. Qantas Flight Training provides comprehensive courses in emergency procedures, security, human performance, dangerous goods awareness and aviation medicine, as applicable to both wide and narrow body aircraft. The training includes classroom work, practical scenarios in realistic cabin mock-ups and handling of emergency equipment. Within training devices, emergency situations are accurately portrayed, including smoke-filled cabins. Tuition covers the control and operation of emergency exits and the evacuation of passengers.

Initial training for cabin crew members includes a full wet drill where crew members are in taught to coordinate activities in aircraft rafts in a pool which simulates rain, storms and sea swell.

Virtual reality

With the rapid development of virtual reality technology, Qantas Flight Training, with support from the aviation regulator, is developing cutting-edge training programs that allow pilots and cabin crew members to train interactively with a high degree of realism, but in a completely virtual environment.

Emergency procedures

We train pilots and cabin crew to handle emergency situations in both wide and narrow-bodied aircraft.

Full-scale cabin mock-ups are used as our main practical training devices. Within these, emergency situations are accurately portrayed. Tuition covers the control and operation of emergency exits and the evacuation of passengers.
