The Best Places to Shop in Bali
Bali is all impossibly beautiful scenery, rich culture and wild surf beaches – but it’s also heaven for the keen shopper. Model and designer Riina Rahnel, who designs jewellery for her Aija brand from her home on the island, shares her knowledge. Here’s where to go and what to buy in Bali.
Best for shoes and accessories
“A must-do in Bali is visiting the skilled craftspeople and picking up a pair of bespoke sandals or a made-to-order wallet. The lovely artisans at My Shop Collection never fail to disappoint.”
Jl Padma Utara, Legian
Best for streetwear
“No.216 is full of the latest and must-know independent designers such as Farron Swim, Cantik Swimwear and, of course, Aija, to name a few.”
Jl Kayu Aya No.216, Seminyak
Best for vintage
“Visit Edith’s Closet – it’s like you’re rummaging through a well-travelled person’s wardrobe full of kitsch one-offs that take you to far-flung corners of the globe.”
Jl Pantai Berawa No.13, Berawa
Best for homewares
“Kim Soo Home is reasonably priced and so beautiful. The shop stocks stunning embroidered bedspreads, linen cushions, artworks, brass cutlery and wooden bowls full of treasures. There’s also a pool out the back and a café out the front so you can sit and enjoy a coffee while deciding exactly how to get it all home with you.”
Jl Kayu Aya No.21, Seminyak
Best for jewellery
“Visit the village of Celuk, where Balinese silversmiths create beautiful pieces of jewellery. Purchase from ready-made stock or, if you have some ideas of your own, you can have something made to order. Start off at Angel to Angels on Jalan Raya Celuk and then continue down the street for more workshops.”
Jl Raya Celuk & Jl Raya Jagaraga, Sukawati
Best for souvenirs
“Pasar Seni Ubud (Ubud Art Market) is my favourite place to pick up a few souvenirs. Wander through the dark and crowded corridors lined with locally made items to find beautiful silk sarongs and woven baskets. Bargaining here is a must!”
Jl Raya Ubud No.35, Ubud
