Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur, India
Built by Maharana Jagat Singh as an escape for himself and his harem in 1746, Taj Lake Palace is now a luxurious island hotel that’s decorated in traditional Indian style with luxurious silks, intricate wallpapers and handmade teak furniture. The palace, a gorgeous white pile, takes up the entire island and feels completely separate from the city – but guests can be ferried over in the matter of minutes. However, the only good thing about not being ensconced at the Taj Lake Palace is the superb view of it, wedding-cake-like, from the opposite shore.
