Highland clan Keith built Ackergill sometime in the early 16th century but the oldest part, a tower house, dates back to the 1400s; it was most likely built under the auspices of the notorious Dugald Keith who abducted a local beauty called Helen Gunn on her wedding night. To escape his advances, poor Helen either fell or threw herself from the tower. It’s said her ghost can still be seen roaming the battlements.
