This slick new steel-and-glass high-rise hotel unfurls in the middle of steamy Bangkok – its shape inspired by the magnolia flower. Renowned architect André Fu is the brains behind the 60-storey building’s curves, its expansive 14th-floor lobby with views of the Royal Bangkok Sports Club and the dazzling outdoor pool on level 16. There’s a spate of excellent eateries on site – from the Front Room restaurant (which gives traditional Thai dishes a Nordic twist) to The Brasserie (which excels at breakfast buffets and flat whites). The hotel’s central location, a cracking concierge and excellent business facilities make it ideal for the corporate crowd.

The location

About one-hour drive from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, Waldorf Astoria is located on the famed Ratchadamri Road, home to some of the city’s most revered hotels, such as Grand Hyatt, St Regis and Anantara Siam. The hotel is surrounded by some of the biggest shopping centres (like Central World and Siam Paragon) and the BTS Skytrain stop is only a few minutes walk away.

The rooms

Waldorf Astoria Bangkok

At 50 square metres, even the smallest rooms (King Deluxe) offer plenty of real estate in the middle of congested Bangkok. But if the wallet permits, book a King Corner Suite, with a king-sized bed, deep bath and separate shower. Blackout curtains open automatically when you arrive to reveal the city’s striking skyline, while a separate living room ensures there’s lots of space to spread out.

Food and wine

Waldorf Astoria Bangkok

There are six different eating and drinking establishments on site. Located off the lobby on the 14th floor, Peacock Alley is ideal of afternoon tea with panoramic views of the Royal Bangkok Sports Club, while The Brasserie is the place for sensational buffet breakfast and – in our opinion – the best coffee in town. Front Room (pictured above) – located on the ground floor – is the place for Thai with Nordic twist, while Bull & Bear specialises in steak.

For business travellers

The hotel offers a full suite of services – from intimate meeting rooms to expansive spaces – for the corporate crowd in an adjoining building, complete with a sweeping staircase (pictured above). The largest venue, Magnolia Ballroom, can accommodate a party of up to 700 guests.

For wellness travellers

Waldorf Astoria Bangkok

No stay at this hotel is complete without at least one dip in its outdoor pool on the 16th floor, with a striking architectural centrepiece (pictured above) and lovely city and park views. Follow the swim with a relaxing massage at the Waldorf Astoria Spa on the same floor.

The wow factor

Located on the top floor of the hotel, The Champagne Bar is one of the most sophisticated drinking dens in Bangkok right now, with city views and striking chandeliers.
