Picture yourself immersed in the Australian bush, kangaroos grazing in the late sun, no sound but the wind rustling the leaves of towering gums... Now imagine this blissful scene without managing the logistics of camping but with the addition of a canopy bed and soaking tub. This is the promise of Sunvale, an eight-guest luxury lodge in Capertee, NSW.

Where is Sunvale?

Beyond the Blue Mountains and Lithgow, Sunvale is part of the Turon Gates eco-retreat in Capertee, about three hours by car from Sydney. Access roads to the property are graded and don’t require a 4WD; there are no nearby public transport connections.

What’s near Sunvale?

Sunvale, Turon Gates, Capertee, New South Wales

The beauty of staying at Sunvale is how remote it feels. While you’re an easy drive from Sydney, the elegant bush stay is quiet and secluded. Capertee town – a cosy settlement that’s not much more than a school, petrol station and pub – is 10 minutes by car if you forget essentials such as milk and bread or fancy a schnitzel and a beer. Otherwise, bring provisions and take advantage of the property’s fully equipped kitchen and the luxury of time.

At the heart of the 250-square-metre property, a long timber dining table sits in the middle of a custom-built galley kitchen (there are multiple fridges, a dishwasher and a high-quality stove). The living area occupies the back half of the open-plan space, with a wood-burning fireplace, television and comfortable sofas to sink into. Fold back the bifold glass doors to the two-level back deck and welcome in the warmth of the setting sun. Branching out from these main common areas are two spacious bathrooms and four large bedrooms; two feature king-size canopy beds and campaign-style furniture including a wardrobe and desk, while the others can be adapted to sleep two on single beds. The property’s inviting palette and décor reflects nature, with warm tones of wood and canvas-lined walls, woven artworks, rattan light fittings and leather detailing.

Sustainability

Sunvale is off-grid and almost entirely solar powered (the stove uses gas).

Accessibility

A single-level stay with a ramp at the front entrance and a gravel parking area, Sunvale’s common areas and bathrooms are spacious and uncluttered. The timber-and-tile flooring is level, however there are stairs heading down to the lower part of the back deck.

Spa

Sunvale, Turon Gates, Capertee, New South Wales

Turon Gates is a 2428-hectare country property that’s home to various camping sites, glamping tents and cottages. While there isn’t a spa or any other communal facilities, there is a unique treat at Sunvale: a wood-fire heated hot tub. Positioned on the lower level of the back deck, it’s a stress-melting spot to take in the views of rolling hills, grand gum trees and wide sky in complete privacy.

What you need to know

While activities such as horseriding and kayaking can be booked during your stay, relaxing in the hot tub on the back deck is a pleasure that’s difficult to tear yourself away from.
