Be Dazzled by This Incredible Video Art Exhibition at the MCA
Brought to you by the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia
People queued in the streets to see Pipilotti Rist’s audiovisual exhibition at New York’s New Museum last year. Now, a major retrospective of her work, Pipilotti Rist: Sip my Ocean, is coming to Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.
Enter the dimly lit room. Lie down on the floor and look up. Above you, images of plants, limbs and sea grass swirl on abstract shapes suspended from the ceiling. This is what it must feel like to be underwater.
A mesmerising experience, 4th Floor to Mildness is just one of the audiovisual works by acclaimed Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist on show at the Museum of Contemporary Art this summer. The exhibition is part of the Sydney International Art Series, which brings the works of some of the world’s best artists exclusively to the city.
Add the exhibition to your summer schedule now – MCA is anticipating the exhibition will draw big crowds. Rist’s last exhibition in New York had people queuing in the street and when MCA showcased her works during the Sydney Biennale in 2014, people sat and watched the installations for hours.
Rist is known for her boundary-pushing, immersive installations that combine video, sculpture and sound. Pipilotti Rist: Sip my Ocean is a retrospective of more than 40 of her works from the past 30 years that explore the relationship between nature and the body.
This exhibition offers a range of different viewing experiences. As well as lying down to watch the underwater world unfurl above, viewers will walk through a forest of hanging lights in Pixel Forest, recline on cushions to watch The Lobe of the Lung and make their way through a maze of floating fabric in Administrating Eternity.
It will take over the entire third floor of the building and there are a range of other experiences designed around it: the Colour Fields pop-up bar, nude tours of the exhibition, a Das Zurich burger on the menu at the rooftop MCA Café and mood-boosting laughter workshops from 8 November.
Kids are covered, too. They’ll be captivated by Rist’s moving images and, every Sunday, there are free workshops to encourage children to unleash their creativity with mirrored lights and projections.
Pipilotti Rist: Sip my Ocean is on from 1 November 2017 to 18 February 2018 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.
