Shopping in LA with Shoe Guru Jodie Fox
Shoes of Prey forever changed the way women shop for footwear since it launched in 2009. The business, which allows customers to create their own pair of custom shoes, was co-founded by Jodie Fox. The shoe maven, who relocated from Sydney to Los Angeles in 2015, has had ample time to discover all the best places to shop in the sprawling city. This is where you’ll find her.
Best for a designer splurge…
“Rodeo Drive. It’s a cliché, but for a reason! Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, Burberry, Bulgari, Celine and Chanel all have gorgeous stores on Rodeo. It’s worth a wander just to see the stunning store interiors alone.”
Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills
Best for boutique shopping…
“Take a walk along Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice Beach for some great boutique shopping mixed in with a couple of select high-street stores. My favourite haunts are Cuyana, Heist and Flannel. Alternatively, if you’re in the La Brea area, I’d recommend dropping into Shop Super Street, a boutique owned by Lucy Akin who has an awesome eye and is well known among the model set. It’s the perfect place to find new labels in lush materials that you’ll want to live in.”

Best for vintage…
“It’s hard to go past a flea market for great vintage of all genres. I recommend a drive out to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl Flea Market. It’s on the second Sunday of every month. If you’re a keen fossicker you can spend an entire day here rummaging through old silver, signage, pre-loved jackets and much more. Early-birds be warned, pick up a coffee before you head to the market – there’s only filtered coffee on offer from vendors there.”

Best for accessories…
“Barneys is my kryptonite when it comes to accessories shopping. They carry a great range of designer handbags and a good mix of core and trend pieces. If you’re a spectacle-wearer, also make time to drop into Garrett Leight California Optical for optical and sunglasses. When I think about beautiful, well-crafted frames, this is the place that comes to mind.”

Best for shoes…
“Well, of course I am very biased when it comes to shoe shopping — why would I go past Shoes of Prey? But if you do need something off the shelf, Nordstrom is a great place to see a wide range of brands. The service and returns policy is excellent.”

Best for jewellery…
“There are a lot of really great local jewellery-makers in Los Angeles. One of my favourite labels with excellent, well-priced modern jewellery made from a mix of materials such as gold, leather and sailing rope is Miansai, located on Abbott Kinney in Venice Beach. They also have a really sleek range of men’s accessories.”

Best for beauty…
“Sephora is so much fun for beauty. My favourite labels at Sephora are Tom Ford for fragrance and lipstick, Hourglass for highlighters, Butter London for lip oil, Anastasia Beverly Hills for brows, Urban Decay for eye-shadow and Dior for nail polish. Their travel product and tools section is excellent, too — just in case you forgot to pack something.”
