Luxury accommodation, fine food, serene surroundings – a stay at Otahuna Lodge, just 30 minutes by car from Christchurch, is pure indulgence.

Do

You’re staying in a magnificently restored 1895 Victorian manor, with an ornamental lake, a swimming pool, croquet lawn, surrounding woodlands and many lush patches of gardens (where they even grow some of their own produce). So, if all you want to do is relax, you are in the right place. If you’re keen to explore a bit more of the Canterbury region, Otahuna arranges a number of quality experiences to suit many tastes: cooking classes, visits to the picturesque town of Akaroa, golf, fishing, wine tours, hikes and massages – right up to helicopter tours. You can really do as little or as much as you want and the staff is very accommodating and ready to help you find the best experiences.

Eat and drink

This is where Otahuna really shines. Wake up to a generous breakfast spread in the sunny kitchen, which can vary but will likely include at least a few things grown from the garden. Dinner is a very formal, but unpretentious, affair in the classic, candle-lit dining room and all courses are thoughtfully paired with the best local wines.

Stay

With only seven suites in the lodge, Otahuna provides a very intimate experience. Go for it and book the Rhodes Suite – this used to be the master suite of the home and has the best views in the lodge from its private balcony, which, on a good day, can extend to the Southern Alps.

Getting there

Otahuna Lodge is just a 30-minute drive from central Christchurch. 224 Rhodes Rd, Christchurch
