The New Way to Explore the Gold Coast
The best way to appreciate the Gold Coast’s stunning beaches and perfect climate is by bike. The Darren Smith Memorial Drive is a stunning 48-kilometre trail along the coast with plenty of pit stops to refuel and relax. Follow this plan and you’ll see all the best parts.
Paradise Point to Labrador
Get up early and hop on your bike at the top of Paradise Parade, one of the northernmost suburbs of the Gold Coast waterways. Ride along the coast on Bayview Street and Marine Parade. By now, the caffeine itch has probably kicked in – stop at Frigg and take a seat on their deck for a flat white.
Main Beach to Broadbeach
Turn left after Sundale Bridge and backtrack along Main Beach past the Federation Walk Coastal Reserve to enjoy the buzz of the Gold Coast’s famous beach. Stop and relax at Macintosh Island Park, a peaceful oasis with a cascading stream that’s home to many species of birds.
Broadbeach to Miami
It’s time for brunch – just after Ed Hardy Park, veer off the trail via Sixth Avenue to Paddock Bakery. Take a seat in the shaded, lush garden and order the purple toast – roasted beetroot and za’atar puree with poached eggs on wood-fired sourdough. The coffee here is excellent too, as are the homemade cold pressed juices.
Burleigh Waters to Currumbin
Now that you’ve refuelled, why not try a spot of stand-up paddle boarding? Lock up your bike at Tallebudgera Creek – it’s a favourite spot among locals, with a number of operators hiring out boards on the banks. The river runs alongside Burleigh Head National Park so the scenery is quite spectacular.
Currumbin to Bilinga
Veer off the path and head inland to Tugun, a gorgeous, sleepy suburb that sits on the border of Queensland and New South Wales. The area was settled in the early 20th century for agriculture – you can learn more about its history via a private tour at Freeman’s Organic Farm in Currumbin Valley. Established in 1915, it’s still run by the same family, who pioneered the banana industry in Australia.
Bilinga to Kirra
And you’re done! Cool off from the day’s ride with a swim – the beaches in southern Gold Coast are some of the region’s prettiest (and most laid back). Try Kirra Beach, the Snapper Rocks rock pool or the dog-friendly Duranbah Beach to watch pups tackle each other in the sand.
