About us

The expertise of our pilots and flight attendants has contributed greatly to our international reputation for safety. Qantas Flight Training plays a vital part in this outstanding reputation by providing aircrew with skills that go beyond standard aviation requirements. Each year we instruct, develop and examine the proficiency of over 12,000 Qantas and customer aircrew.

Qantas Flight Training has its main training bases in Sydney and Melbourne. A flexible approach to customer requirements means that we regularly conduct training in other locations around the world.

Training bases

Qantas Flight Training operates purpose built facilities where pilots and flight attendants benefit from high level practical and theoretical training. The centres contain flight simulators, aircraft cabin mock-ups, ditching pools and multimedia learning centres. Operationally experienced and highly qualified instructors run each session and are also available as advisers.

Locations

Sydney

The Qantas Jetbase is adjacent to Sydney's Kingsford Smith International Airport, 10km south of the city centre.

Melbourne

Our Melbourne Centre is found at Airport West, a short drive from Melbourne's Tullamarine International Airport.

Flight simulators

Qantas Flight Training has the most advanced and extensive fleet of full motion flight simulators in the region. The simulators have as standard state of the art visual fidelity, motion and sound. This allows crew to be trained in all aspects of normal and non-normal operations; including instrument approaches and landings in all weather conditions.

Dedicated on-site maintenance support ensures that training and checking are carried out around the clock.

Pilot training

For over fifty years, Qantas Flight Training has been supporting pilots as they obtain licence approval to fly the various aircraft types for one of the world's best airlines. Our courses include the latest simulators and multimedia learning, making them among the most comprehensive in the industry. Interaction with skilled training professionals ensures a confident knowledge of systems and processes that prepare trainees for the flight simulators, and eventually, a successful career flying 'on the line'.

At the foundation of all Qantas Flight Training programs are pathways and policy designed to achieve the highest possible standards in the operation of commercial aircraft.

Curriculum is developed to cover the requirements of government regulators and the airlines. Courses have a detailed theoretical component, followed by quality instruction in the full flight simulators located within our training bases.

A valuable part of each course is the operational expertise shared by our instructional staff. Their 'real world' industry experience has been gained working within the Qantas Group of Airlines.

Emergency procedures

Qantas Flight Training trains pilots and cabin crew to handle emergency situations in both wide and narrow-bodied aircraft.

Full-scale cabin mock-ups are used as our main practical training devices. Within these, emergency situations are accurately portrayed. Tuition covers the control and operation of emergency exits and the evacuation of passengers.

Our large indoor pools host realistic training for ditching emergencies. Water evacuations incorporating various types of slide rafts and survival equipment are rehearsed. Practical tuition includes fire fighting, medical emergencies, dangerous goods practices and security-related procedures.

Human factors

Within the aviation industry it is well established that lapses in human performance underlay the majority of incidents and accidents. To improve safety, the Qantas Group has embraced human factors courses to modify autonomous behaviour and attitudes by improving problem solving skills using communication, leadership, decision making and teamwork.
