When to visit

Papua New Guinea has two distinct seasons, the wet and dry. Between May and October are the driers months, making it the best time to visit Port Moresby. Temperatures range from 28 to 32°C, making it a good time to go diving, snorkelling, hiking and bird watching.

Port Moresby International Airport (POM). Also known as Jacksons International Airport. Is an international airport located 8 km outside Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea.

The friendly staff at Port Moresby Airport will greet you when you land and assist you with your travel needs. Once you collect your bags from the arrivals area, there are various transport options available to get you on your way.         

Getting into Port Moresby from Port Moresby Airport

Getting into Port Moresby from the airport is easy, thanks to the range of transport options available. Choose from taxis, bus, hotel shuttle, private transfer or car rental. Taxi is a comfortable option and takes about 20 to 25 minutes to get to Port Moresby. Taxis are located outside the terminal and they are not metered, so it’s best to agree on a rate with your driver first. Another option is to organise a hotel shuttle to your accommodation or book a private driver. It's possible to rent a car to see the sights at your own pace. 

Getting around Port Moresby 

Thanks to Port Moresby’s variety of transport options, it is easy to travel around the city. Walking along Ela Beach and the markets is a nice option to take in the sights. The PMV mini buses (Public Motor Vehicles) service all parts of the city and is a cheap way to travel. Buses have the route number printed on them and it’s easy to ask locals where the buses go. There are car rental companies available, though the roads are unsealed, so it's best to take a taxi. It’s possible to hail one on the street or get your hotel to call one for you. Dive boats, dinghy’s and ferries are other scenic ways to explore coastal areas in Papua New Guinea or you can join a tour.

Auckland Airport (AKL). The airport is a major airline hub in New Zealand and there are many domestic and international destinations for visitors to continue on to.  The airport is located near Mangere,  21 kilometres south of the Auckland city centre.

 Passengers on Qantas flights from Auckland are allocated checked baggage If you need more luggage, you can purchase an additional baggage allowance online prior to departure.      

Checking in 

Ensure you check-in online or via the Qantas App before you arrive at the airport from 24 hours before departure.
