Compensating for the environmental impact of your travel
Purchasing carbon credits allows you to help compensate for a portion of the emissions associated with our flights by supporting carbon project activities outside the aviation industry. Carbon credits do not reduce the emissions of your flight.
With our Fly Carbon Neutral program, we've done the hard work for you. When making your booking on this website or the Qantas App, you can easily 'tick-the-box' to participate in the program for your travel.
Your contributions are used to purchase carbon credits from accredited projects that meet our internal requirements for integrity and quality, both in Australian and worldwide, particularly those that have the abililty to help support nature and social outcomes for Indigenous and regional communities, and to cover the GST associated with such purchases.
Supporting carbon projects outside the aviation industry, through the purchase of carbon credits, is not the same as preventing emissions from aviation. While we can calculate the estimated emissions for each route we fly to help determine your contribution, we note that no carbon project can provide a complete guarantee of the permanence of the emissions that a project removes from the atmosphere or a complete guarantee that the emissions avoided by a project's activities would not have occurred without the project. This may mean that emissions associated with your travel may not be ’offset’ in their entirety or in perpetuity.
All carbon projects the Group sources carbon credits from are subject to several layers of scrutiny from global accredited registries for projects based outside of Australia, and the Australian Clean Energy Regulator for Australian projects. Further information on our internal standards for integrity and quality can be found in our 2024 Sustainability Report (PDF) .
Qantas doesn't profit from Fly Carbon Neutral – every dollar is directly used to purchase carbon credits from carbon projects outside the aviation industry and to cover the GST associated with such purchases.
Why support carbon projects outside the aviation industry
For residents of Australia, choosing to Fly Carbon Neutral will count towards achieving Green Tier status.
Where does your money go?
Your contributions are used to fund a range of projects through the purchase of carbon credits including savanna burning projects run by Arnhem Land Fire Abatement (ALFA), the April Salumei Rainforest Community Conservation project based in Papua New Guinea, and World Vision's Clean Cookstoves projects based in Ethiopia.
Wildfire management
Northern Australia is prone to extreme and dangerous wildfires. Every year Indigenous rangers use traditional fire management practices to conduct early season dry burns, preventing larger uncontrolled wildfires. Our investment in the Arnhem Land Fire Abatement (ALFA) projects supports activities that help to reduce emissions that would otherwise be released by uncontrolled wildfires, and supports Indigenous economic development through our commitment in our Reconciliation Action Plan.

Rainforest conservation
Large hectares of tropical rainforest in Papua New Guinea is under threat of deforestation and degradation. Our investment in the April Salumei Rainforest Community Conservation Project helps to protect an area of rainforest in Papua New Guinea that was classified as a forest management area with logging concessions able to be granted. The project supports incorporated land groups to relinquish their rights to logging concessions, providing communities with the opportunity to receive revenue from carbon credits instead of revenue associated with logging activities. This helps secure vital wildlife habitat, supports local communities, and helps prevent the release of millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from logging.

Energy-efficient cooking stoves
Increasing energy needs in developing countries are contributing to deforestation, reducing a forest's ability to absorb carbon from the atmosphere. Our investment in the World Vision Clean Cookstove projects helps fund the distribution of energy-efficient cook stoves to farming families in rural Ethiopia that currently use open fires to cook. The cook stoves reduce air pollution, emit less black soot and methane, and reduce deforestation.
