A smart switch in power providers has helped bring this Melbourne dermatologist’s research to the world.
A year ago, Sinclair Dermatology was paying four separate electricity providers for services over two floors of just one building. “You hear people complaining about electricity costs... it was crazy,” says Professor Rod Sinclair, whose practice includes research laboratories and centres that host about 30 clinical trials at any one time and whose staff of 75 includes dermatologists, plastic surgeons, nurses, scientists and hairdressers.
Red Energy’s rates appealed to Sinclair as he prepared to consolidate accounts but the resulting Qantas Points – “a partial rebate for your electricity spend” – sealed his decision.
Because the Melbourne and Oxford-trained dermatologist was transferring eight energy accounts, there were about 60,000 points on sign-up. And in total, the multidisciplinary practice has earned more than 150,000 points through the electricity provider. “That’s a return flight to London,” he says.
Sinclair flew a lot in 2019, he travelled to Barcelona, Copenhagen, London, New York, Seoul and São Paulo. He maximises how he earns points through his business by using his Qantas Points-earning credit cards without caps on earning, ordering from Qantas Wine and paying tax with his American Express Qantas Business Rewards Card. The points were mainly used to fly junior researchers to conferences when there was no budget for it.
Sinclair Dermatology tests drugs for regulatory approval, clones hair for transplantation, collaborates on work in stem cell biology and does gene discovery work for a range of skin diseases. “When I started out, very few dermatologists were interested in research,” says Sinclair, “meaning I could invent my own path.”
