Places to stay

Accommodation is varied in Mumbai. There are luxurious hotels that have housed presidents and royalty, and there are also authentic Airbnbs scattered throughout the city. If you’re after that grand hotel experience we suggest that you book a room at The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai. Complete with grand archways, shiny domes and a swimming pool, a stay in this hotel is an unforgettable experience. More modest lodgings can be found at the Juhu Residency Boutique Hotel, just 18 rooms and free airport shuttle services, this boutique property is great for those on a budget.

Things to do

It goes without saying that the rich tastes and smells of authentic Indian cuisine are a big drawcard to this city, but when you're not sampling the local food, there are many things to fill your days in Mumbai. Take the tourist boat from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island. This heritage listed island - named by the Portuguese for its elephant sculpture that previously sat on its dock - takes one hour by boat to reach from the mainland. Make the 120 step climb to the 2,500 year old heritage listed caves and sculptures carved into the hillside.

A more leisurely activity would be to settle in for lunch at the Taj Mahal Palace’s Masala Kraft, a modern twist on traditional Indian cuisine. For a more authentic experience make your way to the Dhobi Ghat slums and see how 10 million of Mumbai’s 20 million people live.

Make your way back to the main city district and take yourself to the Art Deco Regal Cinema to marvel at a Bollywood movie, and after, why not head to the expat favourite Café Leopold just around the corner for dinner? Order a traditional curry and a Kingfisher beer with Mumbai’s expats.
