Travelling with Stretchers
Before making a booking for your customer travelling with a stretcher on a Qantas marketed and operated flight, please contact our Specific Needs Team on:
1800 177 474 (within Australia)

The Specific Needs team will:
- Assess your customer’s requirements.
- Determine if the service can be provided on the required dates.
- Outline any mandatory elements required for the booking.
A Qantas Group Medical Travel Clearance Form must be completed and returned to Qantas at least 5 days prior to international travel and 3 days prior to domestic travel.
The maximum weight permitted on a stretcher is 160kgs. If your customer weighs more, please contact Special Handling for consideration.
Australian Domestic Travel
Bookings can be made by IATA/TIDs travel agents. Travel must include a doctor and the requirement for a nurse escort will be subject to your customer’s condition.
International Travel
Bookings can only be made by a Repatriation Company. Travel must include both a doctor and nurse escort.
General Information
General Information
Bookings can only be made in Economy (Y) class. The following steps apply:
- Make a booking for your customer and add a STCR ID field to the patient's name.
- Book the required flight(s) in Y class.
- Add an SSR STCR element into the booking and passenger relate to the patient.
- Contact Qantas Specific Needs Team to ensure the seats are blocked for the stretcher placement.
When an STCR element is included, the booking is automatically queued to Special Handling for processing, but it is recommended you call when the booking is completed to avoid delays.
Once Qantas Aviation Health Services have approved the carriage of the patient, all necessary additional space to accommodate the stretcher will be blocked by Qantas.
Accompanying Medical Team/Family Bookings
Separate bookings should be made for accompanying escorts, medical staff and family. Add a Total Complete Party (TCP) to the patient’s booking to ensure they are seated together.
Medical and nursing trained family members are not acceptable as escorts for stretcher passengers.
Interline Travel
If the itinerary includes other airlines, you will need to contact the airline(s) directly to confirm the carriage of the stretcher, check medical requirements and arrange medical clearance. A through fare cannot be charged and a separate fare and ticket will apply for each airline.
Your Customer
Eight (8) seats are blocked for the carriage of the stretcher and the fare charged is based on eight (8) full Y class fares. Taxes/Fees are charged once only.
When using the below Private Fare Account Code, the total fare of the 8 Y class seats will be automatically calculated.
Private Fare code: STR17
Fare Basis: YSTRFARE
The patient’s baggage allowance is based on the single seat held.
