Extra Seat for Bulky Carry-on Cabin Baggage
Customers can purchase an extra seat on Qantas operated and marketed flights for bulky carry-on cabin baggage (CBBG).
For travel on codeshare or interline flights please contact the operating airline.
Important Information
- Refer to Carry-on baggageOpens in a new tab or window for details of permitted items that can be included as part of a customer’s permitted carry-on allowance and their size and weight restrictions.
- Larger musical instruments e.g. cello or guitar that exceed permitted dimensions can only be carried in the cabin if an extra seat is purchased. The following conditions apply:
- All CBBG items must have a restraining point (handle) on which to secure a seatbelt that must be able to go around the item and through the handle.
- The packaging must be so that the contents are not damaged upon fitment of a suitable restraint for the item.
- The case and handle must not be damaged in any way that may impede restraint of the item. QantasLink DH8 aircraft require an independent approval supported with documentation when a CBBG item exceeds maximum dimensions and/or maximum weight limit.
- Special Handling will contact you by phone or email if the CBBG does not meet our safety requirements
- When a Frequent Flyer member purchases more than one seat for their own use, they will earn both Qantas Points and Status Credits for the seat purchased.

How to Issue the Ticket
Customers pay for each seat utilised. Discounted fares may be used provided all conditions of the fare are met. Any chargeable passenger taxes, fees, surcharges or charges only apply to the customer and not to the extra seat, except for Australian domestic fares where Australian GST (if applicable), is collected for both customer and extra seat.
If an extra seat for cabin baggage is required from the point of origin of the customer:
- For the whole journey - charge the same fare as the customer
- For one or more components - charge the value of each fare component (as per the customer's fare) where the extra seat is required
If an extra seat for cabin baggage is required from a point other than the origin of the customer:
- Charge the applicable fare in the direction of travel for the journey for which the extra seat is required
- For International Journeys: Convert the value at BSR into the currency of commencement of travel of the customer's fare and then convert into NUC
To ticket an extra seat for cabin baggage, two separate tickets should be issued:
- One for the customer
- One for the extra seat for cabin baggage.
Issue the ticket in your customer’s name for the applicable fare, taxes, fees and charges.
Issue the ticket for cabin baggage at the same fare as the customer but exclude taxes, fees, and charges.
‘CB’ should be added to the fare basis of the ticket being issued for the cabin baggage. After the fare basis enter a space followed by a Ticket Designator ‘CB’.
