In a high-cash-flow business, maximising Qantas Points is as simple as accepting EFTPOS payments.
Richard Moffatt has a unique way of incentivising staff at his café and wine bar in Wagga Wagga, NSW. The former competitive road cyclist, who opened Meccanico Espresso + Wine in his hometown late in 2019, uses Qantas Points earned through Qantas Business Rewards to recognise high-performing employees. He’s used points, for example, to book accommodation for his head chef and her husband when they went interstate to see Cold Chisel and to organise return flights to Finland for his restaurant manager to visit family. “When we fly for business, we just pay,” says co-owner Moffatt. “We use Qantas Points as personal gifts to reward our team.”
Moffatt says signing up with Live Payments “fitted into our vision for the company”. The mobile payments device easily integrated into Meccanico’s point-of- sale system and the Live Payments customer service team “is always on speed dial, 365 days of the year, fixing issues straightaway”.
Plus, Meccanico can earn upwards of 150,000 Qantas Points per month. When Moffatt opened Wagga’s first city-style wine bar, “it went off like a firecracker”. But COVID-19 lockdowns meant Meccanico went from a night-venue model to takeaway coffee – from using 35 kilograms of beans a week to 90 in the months since.
Moffatt and business partner, Karl Hulford, successfully advocated for liquor law relaxations to turn their wine stock into a high-end bottle shop. And to maximise revenue under social-distancing regulations, they launched Chef’s Table, a five-course meal with matching wines for parties of 10.
It sold out seven nights a week for seven weeks straight and emboldened them to launch their next innovation: a fine-dining restaurant. Moffatt’s dream is to have Wagga’s first hatted restaurant; in September, he used Qantas Points to take his team to Sydney to tour hatted venues and stay in five-star hotels. “Using points on staff is generous but it’s paying massive rewards for our business.”
